Bare bones of an Efficient Office – Furniture Part 3

efficient furniture for your office

You can make your own furniture anywhere (Thailand)

The most important piece of furniture in your office space is the desk. All those brilliant ideas you have will be processed here. Your desk will see you through the late nights, bouts of irrational, impotent rage, periods of frustrating writer’s block, moments of creative genius and so forth.

This is why it is imperative you choose a desk which suits your needs and personality.

Golden rule number one when buying a desk is constantly reminding yourself that you can never have enough desk space. So make sure you don’t waste your money on a small, ornately carved, totally useless piece of junk, just because your fiancé thought it was cute!

Equally important as the desk is your chair. (Remember the uncomfortable chairs from school? Seriously what were they thinking?) Although you can buy them online, I would recommend going to an actual furniture store so you can try several different ones before deciding on one that is best for you.

As a long time sufferer of really bad chair choices, let me honestly say, your productivity has a direct correlation to how comfortable your derriere is.

But how to choose the best office furniture for your workspace?

Well we’ll get into some ideas below but before you do anything have a look at these adjustable height stand-up desks. Now there’s a unique approach. Here’s what they say:

Our bodies were not designed to sit in front of a computer for hours on end. We feel the best when we move throughout the day and all of our adjustable height desks are designed to not only give you the ability to alternate between standing and sitting but also allow you to position your keyboard and monitor separately at the proper heights. Working at a stand-up desk offers unique health advantages as well.

Which Desk Is Right For You?

So now it comes down to determining which desk and chair are right for you and your space. I personally prefer the L-shaped desks because they make good use of corners.

Golden rule number two is remembering you can never get enough storage space. So pick a desk that has drawers, cabinets and/or shelves. You can choose from a large variety of office and work desks here if you do not want to face the prospect of going to an actual store.

Here’s some desk ideas to consider:

offi half pipe desk

The beautiful Offi half pipe desk, designed by Eric Pfeiffer

Designed by Eric Pfeiffer, the Half Pipe Desk was inspired by the skateboard ramps of the designers youth. With plenty of storage, the half pipe will function as an office in and of itself. The hutch offers a place for your desktop items and under the desk, out of your shin’s reach, there is a shelf for a small printer or books. As Eric says, “A perfect ramp to launch your next project.”

And Now For Something To Sit On…

I cannot stress enough the need for a proper chair in your work space. I have advised against it, but if you haven’t the time to go to a store for your chair, make sure to read all the specifications of any chair you pick online.

Also read every review like a hawk before placing your order. Possible checklist for your chair – arm rests, wheels, back support, neck support, changeable height, recline-ability (essential for those of us who like to lean right back!)

The best way to find your perfect chair is to walk in to your local furniture place and ‘test’ chairs by sitting in the best desk chairs you find. (I nearly fell asleep in one particular chair – I instantly knew then that was the perfect chair for me!)

Mirra task chair designed by Herman Miller

Designed by Herman Miller, the Mirra task chair looks great and is super comfortable too

In a world of same-old work chairs, Mirra is a breath of fresh air. With its natural performance, flexible fit and inventive look, Mirra delivers superior performance for any office task. Its passive ergonomic features automatically adjust to a person’s size, posture and movement. This super comfortable work chair is sustainable too. Made of a minimal number of parts and easily disassembled for recycling, Mirra chairs are 96 percent recyclable, with 42 percent recycled content. Available here

A high comfort factor is important for most of us. Especially if you’re going to be sitting in that chair all day… (Unless you opt for a stand-up desk like the ones mentioned above!)

Your desk and chair need to be in total harmony, one must compliment the other in every way possible. An office chair that’s so relaxing you can’t help but be productive. And an office desk that serves all your needs and still has space for more.

It doesn’t hurt to be optimistic.  You can always cry later.
